HIKING THE MATANUSKA SUSITNA VALLEY, AKA THE MATSU
Where to start? Gosh, it might be easier to tell you places you CAN’T hike in the Mat-Su Valley. For starters, there are numerous trails right here in Willow. Winter groomed trails for snowmobiling, cross country skiing, fat tire biking, and great for winter hikes and jogging, these trails go on for miles! Summer hiking trails lead you to breathtaking mountain top experiences, lakes and glacier fed streams. Hatcher Pass and the historic Independence Gold Mining area. Bring your gold pan with you as some streams are open to recreational gold panning. Here you can hike for hours and hours, or minutes, depending on how good of shape your in! If you are looking for some elevation and views, for the more advanced hiker Hatcher Pass (very cool historic mining area), Just a few miles to the south is the Nancy Lakes trail system. Matanuska Glacier, Eklutna, Pioneer Peak, Twin Peaks, Knik Glacier…the list is endless. Backcountry Warriors will get you pointed in the right direction, and guided tours can be arranged. Enjoy the grandeur and the beauty of Alaska from MANY hiking trails.
Biking The MatANTUSKA SUSITNA Valley
Summer biking and Winter Fat Tire biking is at its finest right from our door at Backcountry Warriors. So bring your bike and backpack! Just a few miles down the road you can choose smooth maintained bike paths and trails to ride as far in any direction you might want to go. To the north Talkeetna, to the Southeast Wasilla, Palmer, and Anchorage. Of course for the more off-road enthusiast, there is Willow Fishhook Road. This gravel road is not maintained and will take you to Hatcher Pass and to the many off-road trails of the area. Having done this ride myself I can tell you it is pretty daunting and one of the most memorable rides I’ve been on. Whether keeping it safe on the maintained path or roughing it on the gravel roads and trails; you will see the most amazing scenery on the planet. Alaska has got to be the best place for a biking vacation summer and winter!
At the end of an adventure packed day of hiking, biking, flight-seeing or fishing, if you want to relax back at the lodge, we have a canoe and pedal boats that you can rent.
